Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
