They're Doing to America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and recently research predicted his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – truly, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding of him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly definitely not the story of a mighty king appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Jesus' answer to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide the person your additional clothing too.

The apparent and direct fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of radical love focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the steadfast resistance to Trump arise in this past year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or refuse?

America is best defended, to put it differently, by reference to the highest about American history, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it mean acting as if the worst regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both meekness and belief, a mixture that committed US believers ought to accept.
